DIY Project 88

Adding Center Brake Lights
by CardassianCruiser (Difficulty: easy)

When I first got my GT, in September 2001, I realized that there were two "marker lights" on each side of the license plate, at the center rear of the hatchback GT's. These lights contain a dual element bulb that are used as rear fog lamps in the European markets.

I checked into getting a switch and wiring these up but the rear fog switch is not available and the wiring harness would have to be modified to add another type of switch so I thought, what about hooking them up to the brake lights, just like in the old Hyundai Pony. Others have already done this but there is no DIY yet so I am adding mine.

The Project:

Tools Required: Soldering iron, Socket set, Phillips screwdriver, Wire Strippers, Electrical tape, Needle nose pliers

1. It took a while to get brave enough to rip the rear cover off the hatch but it was not too bad of a job. One screw on the left and two in the handle, two more to hold the cover-line clips and then pull the whole thing off, gently.

2. Attach a wire to the high mount third brake lamp and then run it down the side of the hatch to be attached to the two bulbs.

3. I removed the light assemblies (10mm socket – 3 bolts each side) completely as it was easier to take off to work on.

4. Solder a short strip of wire on to those stubs left on the sockets.

5. Reinstall the lights and then the wire from the third brake lamp can be attached to these stub extensions.

6. Reinstall the hatch cover and now you can flash a 5 light stop.
