2004 Elantra Aluminum Gas Pedal Upgrade
by ApolloGT2004     (Difficulty: easy-med)

Hyundai changed the type of gas pedal that they use in the new 2004 Elantra GT models. Thus, when wanting to upgrade to the Tiburon aluminum pedals, you can no longer easily cover the existing gas pedal with the aluminum face plate. When I perform any mod the less cutting and gluing the better (and in my opinion, more professional if the mods/installs are seamless), so instead of trying to make things work, I opted to take the chance and swap out the 04' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly with the 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly. I had read posts regarding this but hadn't actually seen that  anyone had accomplished this successfully, especially in DIY format. Please read the entire DIY before you even attempt this modification, especially the "Special Notes" section.

What materials/tools you'll need:

03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly
(part #32700-2D000 can usually be
purchased for $20-$30):

10mm socket or wrench
Pliers
Flashlight/Trouble-light

Special Notes:

(1) All of the work will be performed under the dash area, so make sure you have adequate lighting (hence the flashlight/trouble-light). Space while working is sometimes tight, but if you're patient this shouldn't be a problem.

(2) Also, upon looking over both of the gas pedal assemblies it looks to me the 04' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly features better over-all construction and ergonomics, which may be why they changed it in the first place. It is also a bit larger then the 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly.

(3) Since you are modifying a "crucial" part of your vehicle, safety is always an issue. This is to be performed only "AT YOUR OWN RISK". I have been driving the vehicle for over two weeks at this point after performing the mod with no adverse effects but that doesn't mean there isn't a safety concern to keep in mind.

Steps:

1. Locate the two nuts holding the existing 04' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly in place. Once located, you will need to take these two nuts off using a socket or wrench and place them aside for later use.

2. After the two nuts have been removed, you may now gently lift the 04' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly from the two bolts that were holding it in place. At this point, it is only being held in place by the throttle cable and it is important that you don't jerk it around or pull on it excessively.

3. Once the 04' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly has been removed from the anchoring bolts, you will need to gently turn the entire gas pedal assembly left, towards the brake/clutch so that you may view the rear of the gas pedal assembly and see how the throttle cable is held in place by a white, plastic washer with two tabs.

4. Take your pliers and gently depress the two tabs that were holding the throttle cable washer in place. The picture below shows that the throttle cable should remain "as-is" - you won't have to worry about "losing it back into the engine". At this point you should be able to remove the 04' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly from the vehicle and install the 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly. You will easily be able to "snap" the throttle cable back in place on the new 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly.

5. Installing the 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly requires no other special tools or instructions, simply follow these intructions in reverse order. Instead of using a pliers to remove the throttle cable, as mentioned earlier, you will simply "snap" it back in place on the new 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly. Once the new 03' Elantra GT gas pedal assembly has been installed, you can simply finish the aluminum gas pedal upgrade by covering the gas pedal with the aluminum cover as mention in a previous DIY.
